"I found this collection at my local comic book shop shortly before Spider-Man 3 was to hit theaters in the summer of 2007, and I grabbed it in an effort to brush up on my Venom canon before the film was released. The collection consists of various issues from the Amazing Spider-Man comic series that chronicles the origins of one of Marvel's most popular villains; from Spider-Man's discovery of the black costume on the Beyonder's Planet during the Marvel Secret Wars to his first battles with the vengeance-fueled Venom.
To be honest, this collection would've been better with half as many included issues and half the price. We are only treated to Venom for FOUR of the included FIFTEEN issues. The other eleven issues showcase Spider-Man's return to New York City from the Secret Wars, his first series of adventures with his new black costume, and how he soon discovers there's something not-quite-right about it. Despite having a hunch that there is something wrong with the suit from the moment he returned, he doesn't actually meet with Reed Richards about it until seven issues later. So that means we have a run of issues with unrelated adventures that release minor bits about the suit as the stories progress. I bought this collection hoping for an overload of my favorite villain, not to see Spider-Man battling the Rose or the Red Ghost (and his Super-Apes!).
As a collection, it is still entertaining. I always enjoy reading up on some of the older Spider-Man comics, I just wished the book would've stayed a on topic a little better. I did enjoy getting to see the different artist styles for the series over the years, my favorite being Todd McFarlane's run on the series. McFarlane's renditions of Venom will always be my favorite visions of the character. The collection is an entertaining and interesting read-through for any Spider-Man fan, just know what to expect when you do."
