"This would probably appeal to lots of middle-school girls. The story is told entirely through photos of notes, magazine articles, objects, receipts, lists, school assignments, drawings, IM screens, etc., many written by the main character (Ginny) and various people in her life, such as her mother, her delinquent older brother, her best friend, and some of her teachers. This gimmick got a little tiring to me--it seemed that she communicated almost entirely through notes with her family members, to the point of ridiculousness. Plus the typical pre-adolescent drama started to wear on me. BUT then Ginny starts to be affected, both emotionally and physically, by some more serious problems. I appreciated how the author handled these issues, and how Ginny's interests and attitudes subtly changed by the end."
"Ginny Davis keeps a journal throughout her year in seventh grade, and what she writes and adds to it is all the reader gets. She includes random thoughts, report cards, comics, post-it notes, and more...all of which help tell her story.
Seventh-grade is certainly not what Ginny had hoped it would be! Not only does she have problems in school, but she also has trouble in dance class. Home life isn't so great, either. Her mom gets remarried, her older brother is a trouble-maker, and her little brother has a knack for destroying things. Could life get any worse?
This book is a riot! It's a quick read that is sure to bring both smiles and cringes to readers. Ginny is a very likeable character who has a good heart. The things she includes in her journal are all realistic images (her report cards, plane ticket stubs, etc.) that lets us feel as though we've been invited to a private viewing of her life. Definitely recommend this book to middle school-aged girls looking for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid read-alike."
"Short and funny. I read this while the kids napped. My absolute favorite part: Ginny's poem to her therapist ("How do you feel about that?")-- it reminds me of what my husband's said about my therapists after sitting through one session with me...
I've enjoyed Holm's previous books, and when I saw the title, I *had* to read it. (For the record, I like meatloaf the way my family makes it, but it's one of those things I don't trust from other sources!) I think the middle school years are some of the most painful and awkward times most people have to live through and I am exceedingly glad mine are over. You may learn everything you ever needed to know in Kindergarten, but in middle school you learn how the world *really* works.
Luckily for our heroine, most of her school and peer-related issues are pretty small. However, her family issues are pretty tough, though nothing is delved into with *too* much detail, due to the format of the book. I think a sequel could be good, or a companion novel about her brother, Henry, who is finding high school to not be much better."
"Middle School Is Worse Than Meatloafis a school year told through miscellaneous notes, emails, report cards, and letters. Although Ginny Davis's life is not all fun and games and euphoria, she approaches each life-altering event with a sense of humor and wisdom only a 7th grade young woman can possess. A very unique and fun way to approach a story."
