"I wanted so much to love this book, Jacob's Ladder is a brilliant work of fiction surrounding the Civil War, it was moving, involving, magnificently written and became a favorite novel of mine. I had great hopes for this sequel involving many of the same characters and thier stories of survival after the war and through re-construction and the Indian Wars in the west. While entertaining and easy to read, not nearly as beautifully written as Jacob's Ladder. The same flowing prose just doesn't leap off the page as it did in the first book. Still an enjoyable read."
"This book wrapped up my Donald McCaig crack-addiction.
"Canaan" was a slightly less than satisfactory follow-up to "Jacob's Ladder". I enjoyed the concept of narration by She Who Follows but was disappointed by the detail. I think that by trying to cover both Reconstruction in the East and Manifest Destiny in the West, everything was only skimmed over.
On the other hand, it was interesting to think about the Battle of Little Bighorn occuring simultaneous to the rise and fall of the railroad tycoons on Wall Street. A very interesting juxtaposition."
