About this title: Annie Sullivan was little more than a half-blind orphan with a fiery tongue when she arrived at Ivy Green in 1887. Desperate for work, she'd taken on a seemingly impossible job -- teaching a child who was deaf, blind, and as ferocious as any wild animal. But Helen Keller needed more than a teacher. She needed someone daring enough to work a miracle. And if anyone was a match for Helen, it was the girl they used to call Miss Spitfire.
For Annie, reaching Helen's mind meant losing teeth as raging fists flew. It meant standing up when everyone else had given up. It meant shedding tears at the ...

"Miss Spitfire is a moving story for all ages about how language can unlock the world. This book brings an illuminating look into Annie Sullivan's past and of her experience with Helen Keller. And you better buy some new boxes of tissue, you're going to need them. Miss Spitfire was one of the best and most inspiring books I have ever read. A lively rendering of Annie Sullivan's initial relationship with Helen Keller. Told in Annie's voice, Miller's writing seems authentic in both the loneliness and the frustration communicated by the character. For me, reading this book for the first time was incredible. I have never been really clear about the story of helen keller. All I knew before this book was that she was a deaf and blind child and somehow became really famous. This book opened new doors for me into Annie Sullivan's story. It turns out there is a reason for the title of this book-Miss Spitfire. Miss Spitfire was a nickname for Annie Sullivan when she was at Perkins and institut for the blind. Two Spitfires battling for the one thing that matters the most :communitcation."
"Annie Sullivan takes the assignment to work with a little girl named Helen Keller in this historical fiction account of Helen and her teacher. Annie, herself once a stubborn, strong-headed girl, meets her match in Helen. Her family refuses to punish Helen as she goes about her ways and acts wildly. Annie, frustrated with a lack of support from Helen's parents, asks to go away for a while, just the two of them so that Annie can have complete control over Helen's behavior and correction. Through letters to her housemate at the Perkins School for the Blind, Miller starts each chapter with a grain of what's to come. Well done - good endnotes and explanations."
"Sarah Miller is a good, descriptive writer, one who really brings the struggle of teaching Helen Keller to life. I was surprised to read how little control Helen's parents had over Helen's behavior before Anne Sullivan came into their home. Because Helen's parents had felt sorry for Helen's condition and did not discipline her, it took over a month for Anne to make much progress with Helen. Little by little, Anne taught Helen self control, some etiquette, and how to recognize the words for objects that she touched. It was Anne's persistence as Helen's teacher that opened Helen's mind to the world of words. The author includes an informative Afterword as well as a Chronology, pictures, web sites, videos, and books for further reading."
"This is a great slightly historical fiction book. Helen Keller is both blind and deaf, and not to mention, she is a tantrum starter and her parents are all soft on her. It is up to Annie Sulivan to save her, a girl known in her childhood as Miss Spitfire, for she had a cruel father, a weak mother, a loved dead brother, and a heck of a talent for throwing fits of anger. Annie is also blind and has graduated from the Perkins college of seeing, and she now has moderate vision. Annie gets hired to try to teach Helen language. But Ms. Sulivan she has to teach her the power of authority, and that she will not get everything she wants if she cries. Annie teaches words to her by putting Helen's hand over hers"
