"Fun book. 3.25678905673 out of 5 stars. Army of Joey Harkers from an infinite number of parallel dimensions fight fairly cool evil dudes trying to take over the multiverse.
The main character is interesting. The book moves quickly and the world is interesting. It's pretty funny and there are quite a few jokes and references that YA readers won't get: the Twilight Zone, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, non-Euclidean shapes, the Illuminati, etc.
It's total sci-fi, alternate universe, multiple dimension, what-if fantasy and as such, would only appeal to a couple of my Goodreads friends."
"Liked the premise. There are warring opposite universes intent on conquering the whole shebang: Hex is magic based while The Binary is all technology & science. Of the worlds between, our Earth's universe is somewhere to the left of center where we have mostly science but every now & again a little "magic" is at work. Our teen protagonist, Joey, discovers he is a "walker" with the ability to jump between these many worlds. In each world he meets his "other" selves and it was interesting seeing the variations on a theme of Joey. I also kinda liked the character, Hue, a little bubble-like creature who exists between the worlds and often helps Joey. Perhaps he helps too much - he was dangerously close to becoming a deus ex machina or, as I prefer, a "duck in the machine".
So this was OK or maybe a little better than. Interesting world building & gave you some ideas to ponder. I listened to the audio version but neglected to write the name of the reader in my journal. Guess he was nothing special or I would have commented."
"This book is about a boy who can't tell left from right and vice versa. His name is Joey Harker, and one day, he gats really lost. One day, Joey treid to impress this girl by proving that he does have a sense in direction, even though he can get lost with directions written on his palm. That's when he walk through a dimension. When he got back, the girl wasn't the girl he knew. When he got home, it wasn't his home, his mother wasn't his mother. He found out that he was in a world where he died a year ago. I have no connection to this book. I gave this 4 stars because this was funny and it had action. It was also like Sci-Fi. I recommend this book to anyone who likes sci-fi books."
"This was a random pick off the bookshelf at the library, because it's Gaiman and I'd never heard of it before. I've also been watching Disney's "Gargoyles", that intricate animated series that was popular in the mid-90s, and Gaiman's co-author Michael Reaves was a writer on that show. I wasn't sure what to expect, but knew that it would be enjoyable.
Plot in brief: Joey Harker teams up with versions of himself from parallel earths to stop evil from taking over all possible universes. Joey stumbles on his power to "Walk" between parallel dimensions by accident (a la X-Men) and is trained at a secret facility in the Nowhere-at-all. The Nowhere-at-all is the place where the teams of other Joeys are dispatched. On Joey's team, the versions of himself include: a cyborg, a wolf-girl, a winged girl, a psychic, mystic type dude, and a strongman.
The characters weren't as developed as I would have liked. The best villain in the novel was a man whose tattoos could come to life. More could have been done with Joey's brief training period and the memory erasure part of the plot was a bit unnecessary. I also missed getting to know the rest of Joey's team. By the end they all learn that they have to work together to save the world, and that they're more alike than different, and that hey! they do make a pretty good team. The authors say in the afterward that they tried to get this idea made into an animated series in the late '90s, and the novel does play out like a cartoon. I expect there will be more adventures to come, and you know what? It would have made a pretty great TV show, and a group of kids would sure love to hear this one read out loud."
