"You should read this book instead of The Spirit Level. Where that book was terrible, this book is awesome. Instead of throwing some data on a graph and waving hands, Tim Harford walks through common economic problems using logic and everyday experience. I was disappointed that he didn't "call a spade a spade" when it came to describing economic phenomena (e.g. tragedy of the commons, Pareto efficiency etc) and instead just describes the concepts in everyday language. Also, I didn't really buy his "don't worry about dumping" argument. Everything else is gold. It's a fast read."
"I have a soft spot for economics books, especially somewhat poppy ones. Mr Hartford strikes a perfect balance between poppy and teaching core principals. In fact I had a very hard time putting this book down.
What sets this book apart from other economics books is the examples. Mr Hartford's choices range from Starbucks (why coffee beans will always be cheap but coffee won't be) to the true cost of tariffs to health care reform. In fact his was the only argument for health saving accounts (combined with insurance) that actually makes sense to me. Note these are far, far from the GOPs proposal which may be why they make sense to me.
The final two chapters, on globalization and China, are also extremely well written and help present the net societal benefits of globalization and also helps to explain the true costs of tariffs. These chapters are both to the point and, more importantly, don't sugar coat the problems that are inherent to the system and the dangers of doing things half way.
This was a quick, fun and enlightening read. What more can you ask for!"
"Loved it! This is one of the freshest, most accessible descriptions of how basic economic principles play out in every part of our lives. From the price of coffee to bargaining for a new car, to governments auctioning off bandwidth or trying to accurately control healthcare costs, this book enlightens and instructs. One of my favorite parts was the author's discussion of trade restrictions and how they impact a nations relative wealth. An excellent choice for the non-economist to be entertained along the way of learning something about economics and everyday life."
"I thought this was pretty good. I took a macroeconomics course in college and enjoyed it but never really thought about economics since then. This book was a great "re-introduction" to that material. I see many people thought this book was rather borng, but I thought Harford was pretty entertaining and explained economics using examples I could easily grasp and saw all around me every day (I'll never think the same about double tall mochas again!) It's not a perfect read, though--Harford kind of assumes that capitalism is the best and can be perfect, and doesn't much take into account the bad things capitalism can produce.
But I suppose this is not a text on the history of the IMF or cultural economics--more a layman's guide to everyday money matters for the curiously inclined."
