"Grade 3-5, Dave Packer's fifth-grade classmates are so boisterous and difficult to quiet down that the teachers have dubbed them "The Unshushables." Dave has just read about Mahatma Gandhi and learned that the man practiced silence one day a week to bring order to his mind. Though Dave likes to talk nonstop, he's determined to give the idea a try. An encounter with Lynsey, another chatterbox, sparks the boys and girls into challenging each other to a no-talking contest for 48 hours. They can answer direct questions from adults with three-word sentences but must otherwise remain silent. The teachers are bewildered at the extreme change in the kids until several of them figure out what's going on. Principal Hiatt demands that the quiet students return to their normal behavior. When the children continue with their silent ways, Dave finds himself at the center of the controversy. This is an interesting and thought-provoking book. The plot quickly draws readers in and keeps them turning pages. The author includes the viewpoints of both the students and the teachers, and the black-and-white pencil drawings add immediacy to the story. This lively offering would make a great book-group selection or classroom discussion starter."
"Oh, this is why I loved to read when I was little. What kid, and possibly several adults, doesn't like to read/hear a story where the kid is obviously right but the adults disagree? This was a great story and had great messages about standing up for what you believe in and to truly listen, just listen, to people and think about what you say before you say it. A story worth reading.
As for my age group, though, it's a little young. That's my one problem with it. Hence, I gave it a four, when it should really be along the lines of 4.7."
"This particular fifth grade class is known as the "Unshushables" for their incessant and voluminous talking ALL day EVERY day. Until one day at lunch the Unsushables went quiet. Teachers thought it was an elementary school miracle until they realized that the kids were keeping it up in class. They would only respond with three-word sentences and there seemed to be a point system to keep track of extra words. What was going on? More importantly, what were the teachers going to DO about it?
I loved it! It will be a perfect book club book for my 5th graders!"
"A funny story with a twist. A group of fifth graders, usually talkative and disruptive, decide to go silent for two days after boys' ringleader, Dave, challenges the girls to a duel. Catch? The children agree to a three-word rule that allows them to speak up to three words if a teacher or adult asks them a question. The author does a good job of imagining how this would unfold in an elementary school. The teachers who have prayed for this, get annoyed. The children learn there is value in conserving words, e.g. self-control, peace of mind."
