"Well, this book was different but pretty good. I absolutely loved the grandma, she was so odd. The family situation is easy to relate to and though you might think the story itself is a bit far-fetched its easily understood. I would think a teacher could use a book like this and make some kind of lesson out of it. The book reads really easy and since its not long at all could easilly be finished in a fairly short time with so many pages a day in a classroom or independant reading followed by a discussion. Any kid who wants to start a business mowing lawns or something else should give this book a read."
"Very quick read about a 12-year-old boy who unintentionally starts a lawn-mowing business with the ride-on mower he receives for his birthday. Things start to go out of control as he acquires more lawns than he can cut on his own, prompting him to hire employees and even a stock broker. The main character expresses his continued disbelief over the growth of his business by speaking in short sentences and single-sentence paragraphs. It seems that a main purpose of the book is to teach kids about capitalism and the economy through the case study of lawn boy's business. The chapter titles--The Principles of Economic Expansion, The Growth of Capitalism, The Law of Increasing Product Demand Versus Flat Production Capacity--lend an overly formal, humorous contrast to the simple language of the book. They give readers exposures to the terminology and help make the book a great literacy cross-over to a math unit on business for 5th-8th graders."
"Virginia Readers Choice middle school book. Recommended for gr. 5-8. This short book is more "fluff" than much of Paulsen's writing, but it is an entertaining quick read (I finished it in 30 minutes on the treadmill). The 12-year-old narrator is given his late grandfather's lawnmower. A neighbor hires him to mow his lawn and suddenly he is on his way to a complicated financial situation, complete with a stockbroker, a boxer and a stable of employees. Boys will enjoy this story, however unrealistic."
"This was a GREAT children's book (targeting ages 8-12 in reading dificulty). I read it out loud and my husband and I laughed through the whole thing along with the kids. What I liked best was not just the very funny story, but that the author sneaks in mathematics and principles of stock market trading as well as business requirements in a very funny format. The story is of a 12 year old boy who gets an old riding lawn mower for his 12th birthday. He starts the summer mowing lawns, and ends it with 15 employees, a prize fighter, and almost 1/2 million dollars in the stock market. I think anyone would enjoy this book."
