Engaging Recent History

by Diane L on Mar 8, 2012

THE ARK describes life in Germany in the immediate aftermath of World War II from the perspective of a German family displaced from their home in what would become East Germany. The main character, Margret, is a young teenager mourning not only the loss of her home, but the death of her twin brother and her dog, a Great Dane. This novel tells the story of how she and the rest of her family found a refuge and a new home on the farm of a woman living near the West German town in which they have been resettled. Margret's love of animals, particularly Great Danes, is instrumental in achieving this result. The author was herself in a similar situation after the war, and describes conditions in occupied Germany with first-hand knowledge. She was also a breeder of Great Danes in Germany, and the book provides incidental information about German Great Danes. This novel falls into the YA category, but would be enjoyed by anyone interested in post-war Europe, Great Danes, or both.

The Ark

by sallyteachk on Nov 25, 2007

A well-written, insightful book about the rebuilding of family ties and hope in post-WW II Germany. The focus is on the growth of a teenage girl who has experienced the horrors of war and the difficulties of keeping her family together when the world she knew has been destroyed. A great read for teens; a super family read to promote discussion on faith, trust, and hope for the future.
