A biography of the extraordinary man who became the second president of the United States, this book traces John Adams' adventurous life and spirited rivalry with Thomas Jefferson, and encompasses both the American Revolution and the birth of the young republic. David McCullough describes the childhood, youth and coming of age of Adams, the fiercely driven Massachusetts farmer-lawyer whose marriage to Abigail is one of the great real-life love stories. He also tells the story of his lifelong rival Thomas Jefferson, the Virginia planter and slave-owner. Through their lives, McCullough explores the extraordinary factors that transformed 13 colonies into a united nation that eventually brought these two distinctly dissimilar men to the presidency.
Very Good. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. 751 p. Illustrations (colour and b&w) facsimiles, genealogy table, portraits (colour and b&w). Intended for professional and scholarly audience. Intended for college/higher education audience.
This book goes way beyond the mini-series. I have enjoyed listening to this book slowly but surely, eavesdropping on the comments left in letters of John and Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson and so many others. Letters and other documents were beautifully harvested for the modern reader and leave the reader/listener feeling as if her were part of the scene. McCullough has taken us on a useful trip through time and created suspense for events we already know the results of.

David McCullough is one of my favorite authors and this book makes history alive. This should be required reading for high school students.
