The purpose of this book is to explain how diagnostic ultrasound works and to help readers properly handle artifacts, scan safely, evaluate instrument performance, and prepare for registry and board examinations. This text concisely and comprehensively covers all essential aspects of ultrasound, including Doppler, artifacts, safety, quality assurance, and information on the newest technology. Information is presented dynamically, with a multitude of boxes and tables and over 1100 illustrations to aid comprehension. Only the most basic and essential equations are included, sparing readers from becoming bogged down in unnecessary technicalities and mathematical details. Although emphasis is on the fundamentals, the book maintains its integrity and usefulness for more experienced sonographers. This edition contains new and expanded material on contrast agents, harmonic imaging, coded excitation, panoramic imaging, spatial compounding, three-dimensional imaging, and electronic storage and communication of images external to the diagnostic instruments.Material has been reorganized and rewritten to reflect the digital beam-forming, signal-processing, and image-processing functions of modern instruments. Topics no longer relevant to modern sonographic technology, such as shock excitation, mechanical transducers, and annular arrays, have been eliminated. The chapters on Doppler principles have been arranged into a new sequence. Many new figures are included to enhance the explanation and understanding of principles and concepts. Bolded key terms are defined at the beginning of each chapter and also in the glossary. More subheadings have been included, and concepts throughout the text have been simplified to aid student comprehension.

"Unfortunately, it is a necessity to study this book because Kremkau writes questions for the Ultrasound Physics registries. The man is a master of making somewhat simple concepts as convoluted as possible. I suggest reading Edelman's Understanding Ultrasound Physics FIRST, then using this as a supplement, or read them both simultaneously. I've heard that the key to passing the registry is knowing BOTH books inside and out."
