Now a six part radio dramatisation on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 4 Extra. Under the streets of London there's a world most people could never even dream of. A city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, and pale girls in black velvet. Richard Mayhew is a young businessman who is about to find out more than he bargained for about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his safe and predictable life and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and yet utterly bizarre. There's a girl named Door, an Angel called Islington, an Earl who holds Court on the carriage of a Tube train, a Beast in a labyrinth, and dangers and delights beyond imagining...And Richard, who only wants to go home, is to find a strange destiny waiting for him below the streets of his native city. I love this book! The characters are outstanding and dynamic. The premises of many events are intriguing and many others are amusing. I loved reading about the twists and turns of London Below, where people who fall through the cracks go. Fabulous book from start to finish.
Neil Gaiman wrote Neverwhere more than 10 years ago and I'm still waiting o return to underground London with Door, Richard Mayhew and the marquis de Carabas! Many times over the years I've read this little gem to escape my life and roam with these delightful characters on their life threatening and highly entertaining adventures. Have bought several paperbacks of Neverwhere as gifts and always received thanks for introducing readers to Neil Gaiman. Recently purchased hardcover edition of Neverwhere and it stands "pride of place" in my bookcase. Would recommend this book to all lovers of fantasy-fiction. Patiently await the return of my adventures in London Below, after reading Neverwhere you'll be waiting with me! mksdbq
