Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 8vo 8"-9" tall 209 pages; Inscribed on ffep (possibly from Maxwell Foster), otherwise clean and tight in original black cloth binding in very good dustjacket. In this book Foster discusses the early stories which contributed to the basic plot of Hamlet, continuing with the dramatizations that preceded Shakespeare's. He then takes up in greater detail the earliest printed Hamlet that bears the name Shakespeare on the title page. Known as the First Quarto, this printing has been much neglected and presents a much shorter version of the play than the one we are most familiar with now. In the First Quarto action predominates over poetry. Foster looks at the revisions over the next years and the expanding complications of the play. The book includes a facsimile reproduction of the First Quarto version.
