This is the book that I remember most from my childhood. It transported me. I remember it as if I had heard the sounds and felt the rustling of the trees around me and stood under the shadows. Now as an adult I realise how poetic the text is. I had thought my entrancement was because of the pictures alone. I think the magic of this book may also have been because the rhythm of the words was so meaningful. I don't know whether the pictures in the 1972 version that I had were better, but they seem very unsentimental and real as well as beautiful, to my adult eyes.
