About this title: Louisa May Alcott's name is known universally. Yet, during her youth, the famous Alcott was her father, Bronson - an eminent teacher, lecturer and admired friend of Emerson and Thoreau. Wilful and exuberant, Louisa flew in the face of all her father's intricate theories of child rearing. She, in turn, could not understand the frugal life Bronson preached, one that reached its epitome in the failed utopian community of Fruitlands. In a family that insisted on self-denial and spiritual striving, Louisa dreamed of wealth and fame. At the same time, like most daughters, she wanted her father's ...

"Whew! I finished it. This book was more of an undertaking than I expected it to be.
Now, I love all things Louisa May Alcott. I've been to her house twice. I've read nearly all her books. I find her life and her family very interesting.
That's why I'm a little disappointed in this book. It was somewhat pedantic (an ironic adjective as you will soon see). The book bogged down in sheer language for me. I had to laugh when Matteson criticizes Bronson Alcott's excessively overwrought writing. He says Bronson was not able to write anything plainly and succinctly. Then Matteson himself uses words like autochthonous, and solipsistic, to name just two. For a while I felt like Matteson was trying to imitate Bronson Alcott in his own writing.
From the title, I would have thought the book would have had Louisa as the primary focus, but Bronson was the predominant personality, and I thought Matteson's portrayal of Louisa was almost always from Bronson Alcott's point of view. A more accurate title would have been Eden's Outcasts: the Story of Bronson Alcott and his Daughter.
That said, I liked finding out more information than I already knew, although I was surprised at how much of it I did know. The bibliography contains some books that I would like to explore and learn more from - not just about the Alcott's, but also their associates.
Did it deserve the Pulitzer Prize that it won? If the award was given for sheer research, then perhaps. If given for the writing, I don't think so."
"This book is about Louisa May Alcott and her father. It gave me a lot to think about in regards to my relationship with my children. Just how to my glaring faults shape the lives of my kids? What beliefs do I hold that are possibly clouded?
What I enjoyed about this book was seeing these faults in Bronson, and seeing just how they seemed to negatively effect his daughter, and then watching those very same faults end up giving Louisa just the strength she needed in order to accomplish what she did in her life.
While at first, I kept thinking about what faults of mine I needed to purge to make me a better parent- possible faulty beliefs I may hold toward my children, I ended up seeing just how my particular personality may end up being just what my children need (not that it means I don't need to improve my life)."
"This was a gorgeously written biography that gave such keen insights into the personalities and development of Louisa May Alcott and her father Bronson Alcott. The latter's utopian designs and idealistic spirit led the family into more than its share of hard times, and the former's struggles with moods and eventual mercury poisoning (they gave her poison as a treatment for typhoid while she served as a nurse in the Civil War) made for a difficult and certainly not universally sunny life. But reading about this family and their love for one another and their preoccupation with the world of ideas is really poignant, and Matteson does a great job of charting the development of the relationship between father and daughter from one of relative disapproval to one of submerged tension to one of respect and pride. This biography also provides satisfying glimpses into the characters and landscapes of the American Renaissance and the transcendentalist movement. It made me nostalgic for my own visits to Concord and even more struck by my respect and admiration for L.M.A. The ending of the book is just perfect and made me cry. Such an accomplished and rich biography."
"I really like Louisa May Alcott and enjoyed the book Martin about her father (or at least about the father of the Little Women. I'll let you know what I think. I plan to take if on vacation next week and read as I go. (I misspoke and said our Bishop had read this but it was actually another man who read it and he enjoyed it - he is a history buff and so this was perfect for him especially since it is mostly set in the Civil War). So far I am enjoying it. I am taking it with me on our vacation - we will see if it puts me to sleep.
Well, I decided not to finish this book although it was interesting it went into more detail than I wanted and was wordy. If you are a history buff you would love it - that is probably why our friend liked it so much. It was too much for me - perhaps because I was on vacation and wanted a light read."
