"I have always been fascinated by the civils rights movement, and this was a nice addition to it. The book focuses on the importance of journalists and their shifting views in the movement. A pulitzer prize winner in the history category, I think it is worth the read, although some parts were a little slow."
"This book was very thorough and exhaustive in tackling its subject.
It examined the role of the larger black newspapers, such as the Chicago Defender, Baltimore Afro-American, and the Pittsburgh Courier, and the black press in general, as well as a focusing on a number of more moderate to liberal mainstream newspapers in Little Rock, Atlanta, and elsewhere. (It also highlighted the most pro-segregation papers, like the Richmond News-Leader and both Jackson, Mississippi, papers.) It also very briefly touched on the role communist and socialist papers played in covering the story.
The Race Beat examined the civil rights struggle as it grew slowly after World War II, including the legal fight for school integration, through the trial of Emmett Till's killers, the battle to integrate Little Rock's Central High School, lunch-counter sit-ins, the struggle of blacks registering to vote, James Meredith's enrollment in Ole Miss, the freedom rides, and concludes with the marches at Selma, Alabama.
The authors were somewhat critical in pointing out some of the press' errors, for instance:
"Most newspapers and the emerging journalism on television showed their propensity to cover the hot and simple story, not the complex one; they were drawn to the raging fire, not the slow burn..." so most media missed the first weeks of the Montgomery Bus Boycott because reporters were in Tuscaloosa following the story of a young black woman attempting to enroll in the University of Alabama. (She was deterred after only a few days of classes by violent mobs of white protesters.)
The book also discussed the role of television and the importance of the images it carried into people's homes, the obstacles both black and white reporters and photographers faced in doing their jobs - which frequently included the threat of extreme physical danger and violence, why some chose to intervene in stories they were covering, how both the civil rights activists and law enforcement came to work with and use the media to shape their message, and more.
I definitely recommend this as an interesting read."
"Fascinating look at the civil rights movement from the perspective of the reporters (both print & television) who covered it. There's a powerful idea at the heart of this book: images have the power to convince, both for good & for evil.
