First UK edition (no further printings noted) of the author's third book and second novel, after Wise Blood. 8vo; [10], 243, [1]pp. Fine (and apparently unread) publisher's tangerine cloth with slightly dusty top and fore-edges, the spine lettered gilt; in a bright, Near Fine illustrated dust jacket, priced 16/-, with light soiling to the spine and back panels and several short closed tears to the spine creases. A scarce collectible example from the first printing of just 3500 copies. "O'Connor's second novel was published in 1960, eight years after her first [Wise Blood] and shares its predecessor's interest in reluctant Southern prophets, violence and the grotesque. The title is taken from the Douay translation of Matthew 11: 12, which provides the book's epigraph: “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away. ” These are Jesus's words to the multitude, and the themes of baptism, violence and the Bread of Life pervade the novel....While O'Connor's reputation has continued to rest most heavily on her stories, The Violent Bear It Away remains a considerable addition to the American Romance tradition, and her best attempt at longer fiction." (Literary Encyclopedia) Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors' works (our specialty).
