"I am normally not a fan of poetry, however, I appreciated Claudia Emerson's poignant collection of poems contained in Late Wife. Divided into three sections, Emerson describes life with her then husband, their separation and her life with a new husband. Her new husband has been touched by death in the same way that Emerson feels a part of her died when she and her first husband divorced.
I was particularly fond of her poem describing a turtle in a pond."
"Read three times over during a break-up, which is why I don't think I can give this an unbiased review (in fresh loss is the best possible state for the ideal reader of this collection). But, the poems I found most arresting(most contained in a single section):
"The Last Christmas" "Metaphor" "Possessions" "A Bird in the House" "The Spanish Lover" "Frame" "Second Bearing, 1919""
"claudia emerson is a rock star, plain and simple. gave a reading at the brown hotel, and at the end, she and her husband (the one detailed in the book's third and final section) got up and performed one of the poems, in altered form, as a murder ballad. ("if i'da had a gun, i'da shot her down.") in other news, her reading of "stringed instrument collection" made me weep openly at louisville's fanciest hotel. that's gotta tell you something."
