The Yards ()

by

James Gray's gritty prison drama The Yards features an appropriately dark, spare score composed, orchestrated, and conducted by Howard Shore. Shore leads the London Philharmonic Orchestra through restrained, bleakly beautiful pieces such as "Sunnyside Yards," "Willie," "Confidence in the System," and "Leo," which are driven by mournful reeds and woodwinds and wintry string arrangements. Excerpts from Holst's "Saturn, Bringer of Old Age" from The Planets are deftly woven into compositions like "Blackout" and "Family" -- and reflect the works by early 20th-century composers that Gray played on the set of The Yards for his cast and crew. Like the film itself, Shore's score is dark and brooding but not entirely without hope, and ultimately reveals itself as one of 2000's best albums of film music. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi Hide synopsis
