Not your kid brother's hip-hop Feb 8, 2008
My co-worker gave me a NY Times list of Amadou Bagayoko's favorite African artists and thus introduced this ?middle-aged suburban housewife? to the lyrical genius of K'naan. On the Dusty Foot Philosopher the Somali-born, Canadian-based K'naan challenges Gangsta-rappers to define "What?s Hardcore" under the assumption Mogadishu is a much scarier reality than South Central and this reality is not to be bragged about. Often armed with an acoustic guitar and clever choruses, his sword is his tongue--macho hip-hop this is not, but gritty, poetic, philosophical, and entertaining, most definitely.
