For na´ve audiences under the impression that sexual slavery is a thing of the past, director Christian Duguay's Golden Globe-nominated tale of the multi-billion-dollar modern slavery industry proves that even in the 21st century, human life can still be measured in dollars. Four girls from across the world, including a 12-year-old American tourist on vacation overseas, have been kidnapped and thrust into the terrifying world of international sex trade, and a specialized team of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers are determined to bring down the global network that sponsors such heinous crimes. A former victim who has dedicated her life to protecting the innocent, ICE agent Kate Morozov (Mira Sorvino) braves the flesh-peddlers of Russia and endures the terror of an urban torture chamber located in the very heart of Queens in order to bring the ruthless kingpin behind these crimes to justice. When the world's most dedicated cop crosses swords with the man who drives one of the most expansive global conspiracies on the planet, the stage is set for an explosive confrontation of epic proportions. This movie was recommended to me in preparation for working with human trafficking victims and prostitutes. It will both open your eyes and break your heart to the reality of such abuse and modern day slavery.

TITLE: Human Trafficking
GENRE: Detective Thriller
CAST: Mira Sorvino, Donald Sutherland, Robert Carlyle, Laurence Leboeuf, Remy Girard, Isabelle Blais and Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse
PLOT: A Russian Immigrant turned NYC cop is inspired to have an impact on the international trading of women. She identifies a man who is making $500,000 per day in his brothels alone. It is discovered his network is world wide. After exhausting most tactics of investigation possible, that of going undercover is finally sucessful at stopping this segment of the industry.
RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 9 of 10; This is a well done mockumentary. Though based on actual facts and events, this particular story is constructed to spotlight all the evils entailed in the 'white slave trade'. The action takes place in locations around the world. The acting ellicited from the actors must bring kudos to the director for their performances (Christian Duguay). The only drawback to the presentation is that much of it is done in almost black and white with a lot of sepia tones, which in a way lends to the 'documentary' impression
DVD BONUS: A second disc is included with this offering and it contains behind the scenes interviews with 5 of the actors. And, commentary in French is an option.
ADDED NOTES: From both the movie and the interviews, it is cited that human trafficking is the third ranking money scheme behind #1drugs and #2 weaponry. Most of the western world outlawed slavery over a century ago and yet it is allowed to continue in (mostly) Asian countries. The overflow and connected brutalities effect even the countries where it is prohibited. WHY? It must be stopped and this movie is one step to seeing that that happens.
