Reviews of The Assassination of Richard Nixon

The disintegration of a tortured mind.

by Sivvie on Oct 23, 2010

Based on a true story, this film is affecting, with the character, Samuel J. Bicke (Sean Penn) inevitably lingering on in the viewer's mind. Sean Penn gives a near-brilliant performance of a man fragmenting due to the circumstances in his life coming together to build up an explosive mix in his mind. His drained wife, Marie, played by a dark-haired Naomi Watts, has separated from him, making it difficult for him to be with his children, as she wants little to do with him. His boss, Jack Jones (Jack Thompson), a greasy, vindictive man, taunts him with mean pranks, aided by his equally unattractive son, and his black 'best friend', Bonny (Don Cheadle) is tried constantly by the racial standards of the time. This is 1974 when Richard Nixon is about to face Watergate. It is not easy to watch the mind of another human-being slowly disintegrate, and Sean Penn is just about faultless playing an insincere, smarmy character harbouring the resentments and hatred of a potential killer. Thinking he will make a difference to the world by killing President Nixon, he acquires a gun and a plot and takes steps to become the first terrorist to use a plane as a bomb. It is riveting, if gruelling theatre. The actors are all above average and the direction has the proficiency to allow us time to watch Bicke's anguish and inevitable implosion. In the light of future events, this film is startling in its prediction of the future.
