A Fresh Look at a Classic

by mehaul on Oct 12, 2010

This version of the HG Wells masterpiece has its own angles to explore on some of the paradoxes of time travel. It is different than the 1960 version. But it shows the Eloi as more than just speaking sheep. It gives them a fleshed out society with interests expressed in learning and the arts. The Morlocks are given the opportunity to also be more diverse (Although they are the ones under terrible control by the Uber-Morlock (wonderfully portrayed by Jeremy Irons) The cast performs wonderfully. We can learn from the audio commentary that hardly a frame of film does not have a touch of digital improvement done to it making it as masterful in presentation as possible. It shows in many scenes are breathtaking from the matte backgrounds to the special added effects. The haunting score for the Eloi village panaramic scene is gorgeous to hear. The DVD comes with some behind the scenes documentary and a couple of looped audio commentaries. Overall, I can say I do not feel in any way my money or TIME were wasted with this tale's telling. (Oh how sad I felt about the loss of Emma). I even hope that there is a sequel made to follow Professor Hartdegen through his future world, even a short run TV series would do.
