Super Mario Bros. ()

directed by ,
featuring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis, Fisher Stevens

The huge success of the video games featuring animated Italian plumbers the Mario Brothers led to this $42 million live action movie. The two brothers (Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo) live in Manhattan and are chasing Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis), who wears a necklace made from a meteor fragment. Its powers can free a race of reptilian creatures from the city's sewers. The villainous ruler of the creatures, who are descendants of dinosaurs, is King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). Koopa has kidnapped Daisy and taken her to the underworld of Dinohattan, which is rat-infested and strewn with garbage. The Mario Brothers must overcome many obstacles, just as they do in video games, to free the princess. The film spares no expense with its use of animatronic monsters and high-tech special effects. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi Hide synopsis

Love The Goomba Chorus Line

by mehaul on Apr 25, 2010

TITLE: Super Mario Bros. GENRE: SciFi Comedy, video game based CAST: Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis, Fiona Shaw, Fisher Stevens, Richard Edson and Francesca Roberts PLOT: The plumber brothers travel to a parallel dimension Brooklyn to save their girlfriends. Not only do they save the two girls but the two Brooklyns as well.. RETURN ON INVESTMENT: 8.5 of 10; For just entertaining diversion with a taste of science fiction to it, this film works. The special effects, the costumes the stunts and the sets are all very good. The character development is there. Everyone has their clearly defined roles to play and there are no unexplained extra bits, which means it was well edited. Panned for not being true to the video game, by itself, it does entertain. The musical background does not distract and comes into play for the dancing Goombas. DVD BONUS: None ADDED NOTES: The ending leaves the sense that a sequel was planned. Sadly, too much time has elapsed for that group to do a follow up. Then again, maybe a new group could shine even brighter.
