Great movie about hollywood version of poverty

This is about a director who becomes a bum to understand poverty. On the road to this goal, he meets the character played by Veronica Lake, who is a Hollywood Starlet helping out poor bums. She becomes, through a twist in the plot, a bum too and they travel and see poverty. I would watch it again to just see Veronica Lake. This is the kind of plot that I could imagine Spencer Tracy and Audrey Hepburn might be in....
