Lovable "Fanciulla"

by student1986 on Mar 23, 2009

This film of a 1991 La Scala "Fanciulla" accomplishes admirably the difficult task of transferring an opera to the video medium. I never felt that important elements of the production were falling off the edges of the screen, but a judicious use of closeups also enables the viewer to appreciate delicate details of production and acting which make this a truly superlative DVD. As regards the production itself, the principal roles of Minnie, Johnson/Ramerrez, and Jack Rance are sung with strength and sensitivity, and they are solidly backed by the miners and chorus. Zampieri nicely captures Minnie's innocence and courage; Pons avoids cariacature with his mellifluous, malevolent Rance. Domingo is a standout here: his Johnson exudes charm, and the character's complex balance of swagger and self-doubt never rings false. His rendition of "Or son sei mesi" is mesmerizing. In short, Puccini's romance is well-served by the production, and the production is well-served by its DVD transfer; bravos are earned, and repeated viewings are a pleasure.
