Fun & funny, mind candy with heart
by MizLoo on April 22, 2007I love this "Southern vampire" series, by a talented & prolific writer. The contining saga of barmaid/waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who stayed a virgin a long time because of the "disability" of being able to read minds, and who doesn't mind sharing with the reader the things she "heard" would-be lovers thinking, is funny and very human. Sookie discovers that vampires are ideal lovers because of the blessed silence that comes from having no idea what they are thinking,
The series is set in the contemporary South, with the twist that vampires have "come out" since the invention of synthetic blood that makes attacking humans obsolete, or nearly so. Harris imagines a world in which fearful creatures of legend (were-wolves, vampires, other were-beings, maenads, etc) have fully realized lives and social structures that intersect those of humans who may be intrigued, revolted or just confused by encountering the supernatural at the supermarket or strip mall.
Three-dimensional characters, laugh-out-loud funny dialogue and solid plotting consistently held this reader's interest.
