too preachy - disappointing
by AndreaF on April 2, 2007I'm a big fan of the Rita Mae Brown/Sneaky Pie Brown mysteries. But this book was a disapointment. It started out OK, but then bogged down in too much lecturing by various characters about illegal immigrant labor, agricultural practices, smoking, you name it. I don't necessarily disagree with anything she advocates, it's just that it ruins the stride of the mystery and feels completely out of place.
There is no way you can convince me that a cat would know anything about agricultural monoculture and viral susceptibility - nor that she would care one lick about it if she did! Everyone knows that cats' only concern about plants is those they can nibble, and those they can stalk through.
Another problem with all this preachiness is that it made many of the characters sound the same. This made it harder than usual to get to know the characters as distinct personalities.
I hope this book is an aberration and not a harbinger of things to come. Read any of the others in this series, but skip this one.
