Total and complete misunderstanding of science
by JerryM on May 3, 2010I thought Ben Stein's movie was bad. Wow! Is it too much to ask for creationists to learn something about evolution and science before writing books and making movies about them? I know they have to win converts to their religion. Frankly, that is the sole and whole purpose for these efforts. They believe that if they don't do so then people are going to end up in hell. The idea that a deity would punish someone for being too smart or educated in a field by eternal hellfire is not only inane but insane. . How anyone takes any of these people the least bit serious, I have no idea.
First, Charles Darwin compared to the people of the mid 19th century was a very progressive thinker on race. While some Christians were also, very many were not in fact. In fact, some of the biggest supporters of racism and slavery used the bible to defend their views. If we look at the Nazis, they built Nazism on a background of anti-semiticism that went back many, many centuries of persecutions of Jews.
Do I have to mention the passion plays that were held in Europe and Germany in specific? These plays used to further up hatred of the Jews. Now of course, the Christian right blames Nazism on atheists as if Germany was a hotbed of atheism and the average German who favored persecution of Jews was an atheist. In reality those Jews who were persecuted and killed were probably much more likely to have atheist like beliefs then their persecutors.
Lastly, even if we were to say that evolution (which it did not) led to the massive violence of the 20th century then that isn't an argument against it being true. This is a point that creationists and the Christian right have trouble understanding. Something isn't true because it would be a bad thing that it is true. Evolution is true based on the evidence for it, not because it supposedly was or is a bad thing for society if it was true. As an analogy a 5 year old boy jumps out a window thinking he can fly and falls to the ground killing himself. Tragic yes, but it does not prove gravity or relativity is not true because the child died! Gravity or relativity is not untrue because it would have been better for it not to be untrue. Before creationists write and create more books and movies like this, I urge them to read a book on science and logic beforehand. Is that too much to ask?
