An oldie that should have been a goodie
by dekesolomon on October 15, 2009Lt. William Lewis Herndon, USN, set out to explore the valley of the Amazon River in 1851. He was a brave man. In making the trip from savage Peruvian jungles to civilized outposts in Brazil, he bore up under unbearable hardships, he ruined his health, and he very nearly died.
It is too bad, therefore, that Herndon couldn't write for squat and didn't know how to tell what must have been one honking lulu of a story. He should have hired somebody like The London Times' Billy Russell to go along.
