After reading some favorable reviews I decide to give this book a try. I should have read this review first. The story, plot, characters etc. were simply not interesting. Even after reading half the book I could not muster any concern let alone interest in what was happening. I considered reading it for the sake of following thru on what I started. However, I read for pleasure and this book was decidedly not pleasurable. The writing was, frankly, amateurish. Although the fact that it is centered around the Chinatown culture in New York, the author could or did not make introduce or develop characters or situations that delved beneath the superficial aspects of the cultural distinctions. In short, I had no empathy with any of the characters nor interest in their fate. Reading, or more appropriately stated, language induced insights into personality, cultures, events, etc. should, if done correctly, be a pleasurable excursion not a labor. This trip is not worth the ticket price.
