Should he make money, heal the sick, or try to understand the mysteries of life? By the end of the novel, he opts for the latter as his life pursuit. He keeps moving to larger cities, but his final move is to the woods of Vermont where he returns to pure science. This novel brought Sinclair Lewis the Pulitzer prize in 1925 which he refused.
