About this title: "A Year Without Made in China" provides you with a thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining account of how the most populous nation on Earth influences almost every aspect of our daily lives. Drawing on her years as an award-winning journalist, author Sara Bongiorni fills this book with engaging stories and anecdotes of her family's attempt to outrun China's reach - by boycotting Chinese made products - and does a remarkable job of taking a decidedly big-picture issue and breaking it down to a personal level.

"This kind of book/project really speaks to my sensibilities. I tend to take things too far.
In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance, Robert Pirsig talks about plastic and how many 'hippy' types, maybe what we today would call hipsters, find plastic 'square.' I kind of find Chinese merch, on the whole, 'square.' The quality is often shoddy.
That said, some of the best, highest quality audio electronics in the world are Shanling and are made in China.
I could see myself doing this experiment myself, but she (Laura Bongiorni) cheats over and over again. She makes it seem so impossible, but I don't think it would be, but life is better without having to look at every label.
Yes I lament the fact that all the factory jobs have either left this country (USA) or have become low-paying, low-income jobs because of China. But what good is it to be nostalgic and lose whatever advantage that cheap manufacturing has given? Why throw out the one good thing it has brought us in the USA?
That said, after reading this book, I will look for US-produced products when possible."
"This book made me a think of a couple of things. First, of the huge amount of things we buy that are imported, especially from China, and second, of how difficult it is to buy certain things if you exclude ones manufactured in China. Sara Bongiorni and her family attempted to live for a year without buying anything from China. It was not easy. She ended up having to spend a fortune on sneakers for her son and sunglasses for her husband, among other things, and having to do without a coffee maker and other things we take for granted. While I think the experiment was interesting, I would not advise it for anyone who has young children. It's just not fair to them to make them do without so many toys when they are too young to understand, and it's not really their idea to refrain from buying things from China. Wes, her 4-year-old son, too young to understand the boycott, was developing some xenophobic thoughts about a country he had never heard of before their experiment, although I don't think any permanent damage was done.
The book went pretty much month by month detailing their experiences in trying to go without things "Made in China." It was written in a humorous tone, but does touch on some serious subjects. The world is changing whether we like it or not."
"Sara Bongiorni decides to go one whole year without buying anything made in China. She does have a few exceptions: gifts from others or if they already own the item. This book follows her funny and frustrating attempt to stick to her guns. One funny episode: she suffers guilt when she can't find any shoes to fit her toddler and she's afraid she's damaging his feet with his too small shoes. She finally ends up buying $50 Italian shoes online. She is very creative in getting around not buying Chinese made goods and she earns a reputation in the community as the one who doesn't buy things from China. She also has an aversion to Wal-Mart (which I can relate to) and I appreciated her sincere attempt to meet the challenge of trying to buy USA made and local goods."
"It seems to be rather fashionable to try something for a year and then write a book about it. (See my review on "A year of Living Biblically") What they eat, buy, visit, etc. all seem to these authors to be very interesting to other people. Memoirs are at their core narcissistic pieces of writing, but sometimes they are redeemed by actually being interesting, funny, or inspirational. Bongiorni has some great passages (I laughed hysterically about her husband's experience running in the glacier goggles!) and an interesting premise, but the book was mostly a daily recitation of what she couldn't buy. Even she seems unsure about what she should have gotten out of this experiment (or why she's even doing it at all), which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me about this being a worthwhile undertaking.
I read a lot of labels too - mostly looking for corn syrup. But so do a lot of people who have food allergies, are vegan, or are just picky. And sometimes products are really really hard to find without the stuff you can't have. Should we all write a book about it? I'm trying to go without a car as much as possible. Does that merit a book?
I also wish she'd gone a little deeper into the "globalization" aspect rather than just listing where things are (or aren't) made. I was expecting a deeper explanation. Maybe this would be a good introductory book to a college course that does delve much deeper, but if you're looking for one volume to explain it all, this isn't it."
