Unusual, memorable and finely written. So glad to have been introduced to this book and its author.

Read the jacket first. It gives you names. A local women gives lectures on this book. It is full of metaphors, which I didn't get because I don't speak french. It is a lovely book. I had to "stick with it" before I started to enjoy it. By the time Kakuro Ozu enters the book it needed another character. If you read dime store romance novels you probably won't enjoy this book. It takes a little work.

  • A unique perspective - highly recommended! Dec 11, 2009

A wonderful portrayal of the unconventional that challenges conformity to societal norms and role assignments based on class status and celebrates the unique individuals love of art, beauty, intellect, and meaning. The two seemingly incongruous narrators who live in the same building in Paris are unwaveringly fascinating and the secondary characters (primarily parents, siblings, friends, neighbors, pets and a psychoanalyst) offer a rich background for the narrative.
Clever, humorous, uplifting, compelling, and very well-written I highly recommend this book to others.

  • Very French Jul 9, 2009

A bit superficial but interesting study of the pretensions of the French. Barbery seems to be attempting to break down the stereotypes but ends up reinforcing those. The first 100 or so pages are a bit tedious but the book picks up after that until the somewhat contrived ending.
