Perez-Reverte's latest installment in the Captain Alatriste saga is a bit of a disappointment. Gone from the previous novels is the beauty and excitement of Spain which is replaced by the rainy, sombre cold climate of Flanders. Perez-Reverte does show us how knowledgeable he is of 16th century arms and munitions, battles and strategy but the human element that made his previous novels so exciting is lacking. The story line is somewhat plodding and slow. Unless one is a true aficionado of Perez-Reverte and knows of the preceding novels, the reader will be somewhat lost as to the roles of the main characters. Here's hoping that the next installment returns us to sunny Spain
