Unexpected twists

by Ellyb on Nov 30, 2008

I meandered happily through this book, thinking I knew what was going on and how the plot would resolve itself. What hubris. Mal Peet proves to be quite the clever writer with "Tamar: A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal." The story takes place in two locations and times. The first is the Netherlands in 1944, where two Dutch SOE agents are working to coordinate the efforts of several different Dutch resistance groups. The second is England in 1995, where a teenage girl named Tamar sifts through a mysterious box left to her by her recently deceased grandfather. She struggles to put together the pieces and discover why he left her the things that he did, and the reader is right there with her in her, because while the 1944 storyline seems completely clear (an erroneous assumption to make), the 1995 thread remains an obvious enigma up to the climax. I really liked reading "Tamar." The writing was plain but evocative, and went by very quickly without seeming obviously written for teens or young adults. And really, anything else I want to say about the book is summed up in the second part of the title; it certainly is "A Novel of Espionage, Passion, and Betrayal."
