This information could save lives

by MaizenBlueMike on Jul 1, 2010

This is a fascinating read from start to finish as it details the many ways that people have lost their lives both along the rim and within the depths of the Grand Canyon. I believe that you cannot help but come away without a much deeper respect for the many facets and hazards in and around the Grand Canyon. This book gives detailed accounts of the freak falls over the edge of the canyon, heat related deaths, accidental falls within the canyon, aircraft deaths, drownings related to the silt and hypothermia in the Colorado River, peculiar deaths that have occurred, suicides, etc. This is a must read for anyone planning a trip into the canyon and along the rim because it points out unknown but obvious perils that exist, along with tips for survival. The Grand Canyon's beauty is alluring, but people will come away with a deeper respect for this natural wonder and an awareness that you cannot attain without knowing the history surrounding the canyon. I highly recommend that you read this book as I could not put it down. The authors have researched the information well and weave a gripping account of the many ways that visitors have lost their lives.

Death in Grand Canyon

by Beverly on Jan 16, 2009

I hiked to Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, November 2008. At the canyon rim, this book was $23. and I did not want to buy it because of size and weight. This was the most serious hiking I had ever done and water is the heaviest thing one wants in a backpack. Also, reading it after the fact instead of before seemed more appealing. This book is well researched and written. The author painstakingly researched park records and interviewed rescuers and victim's friends and relatives. This info is presented in an easy to read format of fact and primary source recollections. I might also add, I found the book at Alibris for much less than the Rim price. After reading it, I can see how it would be beneficial before any descent into the Canyon.
