'Buy my stepfather's ghost' read the e-mail. So Jude did. He bought it, in the shape of the dead man's suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it: because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books and all the rest of the paraphanalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock. But the rest of his collection doesn't make the house feel cold. The bones don't make the dogs bark; the movie doesn't make Jude feel as if he's being watched. And none of the artefacts bring a vengeful old ghost with black scribbles over his eyes out of the shadows to chase Jude out of his home, and make him run for his life ...

With a quick-paced plot and sympathetic characters, this is a ghost story for today's reader, about a burned out rock musician and the groupie who loves him...and a very angry ghost from his past.
I loved it, and couldn't put it down.

Best horror novel I read since Pet Sematary!!
I enjoy reading a good horror novel from time to time and rarely come across one that sets such scary images. My imagination still holds images that will force me to sleep with the lights on. Hill writes a great novel. This book won the 2007 Bram Stoker Award for best horror novel. It truly deserved the award; the author had me jumping at shadows from chapter 1 and on the run with Jude (Judas) to the very end. Hill also did a wonderful job of combining the mystery of Craddock?s past with the horror of Jude running for his life. This book would make a great movie!! It?s fast-pasted and contains some great shock value. I can?t write much more about the plot without giving away some of the twist and surprises. I will keep this review short. It?s a great book and worth every bit of 5 out of 5 stars. I hope Joe Hill can keep this quality of story up for future full-length novels. If so he lands right next to my favorite reads like Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Dean Koontz.

I at first got this book from the library, returned it because I wasn't sure I would like it. But then went back and reread it. I am sure glad I did. It was a very good book. It was hard to put down once you got into it and it pretty much started into the really good parts right away. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read something just a little off the beaten path of what they would normally read.
Publishers Weekly, 2007-04-30 This first novel by Hill, the second son of Stephen King, provides the perfect raw material for Lang to create an auditory world so convincing that the listener will feel as if they have seen a film by the time they are through. The complex plot can be simply stated: as a lark, retired heavy metal star Judas Coyne buys a haunted suit online. The ghost turns out to be the very angry stepfather of an ex-groupie/lover of Coyne's who killed herself after he sent her away. The relentless ghost is there to kill Judas and anyone who tries to help him. Lang's superb narration is nearly hypnotic in its calm delivery, perfect as backdrop for the action and horror that surrounds it. His Coyne is reminiscent of John Goodman, deep and understated, with a foundation of confidence with a barely perceptible trace of a Southern accent. Each disk starts with a bit of Nine Inch Nails-ish heavy haunting electronica, an ideal tone setter for the journey. Simultaneous release with the Morrow hardcover (Reviews, Dec. 11). (Feb.) Publishers Weekly, 2006-12-11 Stoker-winner Hill features a particularly merciless ghost in his powerful first novel. Middle-aged rock star Judas Coyne collects morbid curios for fun, so doesn't think twice about buying a suit advertised at an online auction site as haunted by its dead owner's ghost. Only after it arrives does Judas discover that the suit belonged to Craddock McDermott, the stepfather of one of Coyne's discarded groupies, and that the old man's ghost is a malignant spirit determined to kill Judas in revenge for his stepdaughter's suicide. Judas isn't quite the cad or Craddock the avenging angel this scenario makes them at first, but their true motivations reveal themselves only gradually in a fast-paced plot that crackles with expertly planted surprises and revelations. Hill (20th Century Ghosts) gives his characters believably complex emotional lives that help to anchor the supernatural in psychological reality and prove that (as one character observes) "horror was rooted in sympathy." His subtle and skillful treatment of horrors that could easily have exploded over the top and out of control helps make this a truly memorable debut. (Feb.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
