Great pep talk for teachers

by kadrew on Dec 11, 2008

I especially like his presentation of the stages of moral development. I used this with 7th graders, who immediately applied it to themselves. What's more, the comparison endured: three months later, they still refer to it! Esquith is a dedicated teacher and offers numerous suggestions for engaging students. I find it helpful to refer to his book at least once or twice a year, if only to remind myself (when things get difficult) about why I became a teacher!

A quick read which could benefit teachers and non teachers alike. Inspirational.

The title of Rafe Esquith's new book, TEACH LIKE YOUR HAIR IS ON FIRE, just makes you want to put the world on pause so that you can figure it out. Who is this guy? As you start to read this book, you are drawn in by Esquith's humor, common sense, empathy, and his anecdotes about his students. The book is smoothly written and not preachy. Esquith shares his teaching strategies and they are geared towards both parents and teachers. The chapters are short and easy to digest. I have called friends while reading it and have captivated them by Esquith's words, and have them laughing wildly. As a teacher, Esquith is voicing some of my opinions which are not mainstream nor conventional. Esquith has been honored for his teaching yet he has not struck out on the talk show circuit, leaving his students behind. He has remained a classroom teacher and that fact belies the beauty found with in Class 56 at Hobart Elementary School in Los Angeles. Read this book and you will wish for more teachers like Esquith for your children or your friend's children.
