More than a masterpiece
Im a great fan of Stephen King and Ive read all his work. I said work because thats what all his books are when put togheter: a personal universe of places, people, smells and textures, full of links, windows and doors to cross from one to another (for anyone interested in the matter,go to The Complete SK Universe, from Stanley Wiater, Chris Golden & Hank Wagner). I started reading him 25 years ago. When the 1st chapter of the DT, The Gunslinger, was published in Spain (at the time I read him translated), I had read "It" and 2 or 3 more books of him,and I enjoyed The Gunslinger, but I wasnt plenty aware of its importance, of the plots scope, the challenge it was for his author as well as for his readers. After that 1st taste of Roland and his world and his quest, he kept on giving us other wonderful books, alternate with following steps on the way to the DT. On the 2nd book,The Drawing of the three, Roland draws two caracters of our world to his own, on the 3rd,The Wastelands, Jake enters what Roland taught them three as their ka-Tet,being Ka a kind of budism word for destiny. Itd take a wole book to talk about the saga (and there are yet many of them) but in short: The DT can be read in a multiple levels of lecture; it can be an enjoyable epic long story of friendship and adventures such as the Lord of the Rings but it contains much much more: 1- multiple worlds all from SKs imagination but, as they are given to us, his imagination becomes part of OUR collective imagination, thouh, taking quantum mechanichs, it /they become/are reality. 2-An interesting study of how writer creation trascend him and transform him 3-A wonderfull lesson of literature and writing 4-A book of stories inside the story, the "argument", always other worlds within the world of the Tower, 5- A powerfull image, that of the Tower, that mirrors life and dead meanings. Its hard to make sense for those who dont know about the Tower in such a short space but I highly recomend you to read the 7 books (8 in spanish, if we consider that the last one ,The Dark Tower, are 2 books). And re-read them after, and then listen to the audio books. Im positive that, in long term period, itll become one of the key stone books of the 20th-21th century. You may read also Salems Lot, The Stand, Hearts in Atlantis, Insomnia and Black House, the more related books to Rolands world. I truly can say that Roland,Eddie, Susana,Jake,Oy, The Tower,they/ it is all real,at least as real as any place and time can be and I say my thanks to Steve King: thank you big big.
