Yankee from the West

Though the writing is somewhat stilted, this is a highly interesting memoir from a man of solid integrity who spent his public career battling those who used power to serve themselves. Wheeler was a true public servant, who began that service in Butte, Montana, fighting the powerful Anaconda Copper Company on behalf of miners, went on, as a senator from Montana, to fight corruption in the Harding administration, and then to oppose President Roosevelt's court-packing plan. Well worth reading today to remind us that integrity and honesty have their own power, and especially interesting to Montana readers for its glimpse of the early history of mining, unions, and corporate corruption in Butte and in the state capitol.
