At the outset, he boldly confronts the existence and nature of God, concisely surveying dozens of respected philosophers while persistently maintaining that our understanding of God is extremely limited. A respected Thomist scholar and professor of philosophy at Fordham University, Davies typically endorses Aquinas's view that God is not rational, so it follows that we cannot really know his reasons for permitting evil to exist. In fact, Davies makes no attempt to explain why evil exists at all. After considering a number of famous attempts to deal with the problem of evil, he suggests that each falls short of the mark and concludes that there can be no explanation concerning the role of evil in God's created order. So where does that leave us? With a God who has created an enormous amount of goodness and-if we take the Trinity and Incarnation seriously-is himself loving and good. And if we believe that Christ is God, his crucifixion makes him a victim of evil, as one of us and not so distant from us as those who reflect on evil often like to make him out to be.
