Deric Longden wasn't a cat lover, but from the moment he saw the tiny kitten sitting on an upturned bucket down in the garden he was hooked. Strictly speaking it was the neighbour's cat, but somehow when the rain started it seemed only natural to bring the little creature inside. Once there, it slipped so easily into Deric's and Aileen's lives that there was an unspoken agreement between all three that it had found its real home. Aileen being Aileen, it was probably inevitable that sooner or later it would spend several hours trapped inside the refrigerator, and Deric being Deric, the obvious way to thaw it back to life was to wrap it in a thermal vest that had got itself accidentally shrunk. So the cat who came in from the cold got its name - Thermal. It became another of the characters who populate the author's world, and this book is written in his customary style of gentle humour, comic solemnity and cuddly charm.

This is the book that started it all, for me anyway.
It's Deric Longdon's third book, but the first one I read. I have great memories of reading it to my girlfriend, and just lately thought to re-read it. When I was finished, I had to read his other books.
Deric is a reluctant cat-lover, but he understands them very well, and writes about them hilariously.
Publishers Weekly, 1992-08-31 Longden was never a cat-lover, but a rain-soaked white kitten in his neighbor's yard changed all that. He and his wife, English novelist Aileen Armitage, adopted the stray and named him Thermal after he nearly froze in their refrigerator. In this heartwarming, genial account, which is flecked with puckish humor and endearingly illustrated with line drawings, the British radio broadcaster recounts the misadventures of a high-energy cat who eats peanut butter, cavorts with dachshunds, shreds envelopes while sitting in a wastebasket and stays away from home for a full month. Longden's cheerfully busy household expands when a second adoptee, Tigger, turns the cellar into a halfway house for roving neighborhood cats. As Thermal changes from an ankle-rubbing sycophant to a toilet-roll-spinning terror, it's touching to watch Longden's affection for and understanding of his furry soulmate continually deepen. (Oct.)
