An excellent study of the building & thought that went into building the early American navy.

Decent early US naval history
This book starts out strong but loses its focus and deteriorates toward the end. One of the things I enjoyed the most about it was how it connected the infant navy with other events of the time period, showing th political maneuvering and fighting that accompanied the growth of the navy. Unfortunately, about halfway through, the book loses its focus, to the point that it is sometimes hard to tell what order different events happened in. Also, the author is sometimes distracted by tangents. All in all, this is a good book, but not stellar.

Good popular history of the first few US Navy Frigates and their extraordinary influence in America's early history. Traces most of the ship's perfromance through the Barbary War and the War of 1812, along with their other lessor adventures. Author cannot decide if he is writing a history of the indivudal ships or an early history of the US, so the later sections of the book suffer a bit from this lack of focus. Best parts of the book delt with the early aspects of the ship's acquisition and construction. Details regarding Congressional vaccelation and innovation in ship design were very interesting. The author profiles the various naval architects and shipbuilders well, and his discussions of the details of the ship's construction are noteworthy. Good starter book for a more detailed study of these important ships, or as a supplement to otehr reading on the Barbary Pirates, War of 1812, or Jefferson & Adams Administrations.
