With only a year to master her magic - or face death - Yelena must begin her apprenticeship and travels to the Four Towers of the Magician's Keep. But nothing in Sitia is familiar. Not the family to whom she is a stranger. Not the unsettling new facets of her magic. Not the brother who resents her return. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her rare powers, a rogue magician emerges - and Yelena catches his eye. Suddenly she is embroiled in battle against good and evil. And once again it will be her magical abilities that will either save her life...or be her downfall.Read Less

This is part of a trilogy based on an intriguing premise. The characters are interesting and well imagined, as well as memorable. The nice thing about them is that they are not perfect, and their growth is one of the things to watch for. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. I just realized that now I have all three, so I think I will. :-)

I never give a book a "5" but if I could give this book and the other two in the series a 4-3/4 I would. Very easy read. Very well written. Keeps the reader's attention and moves along extremely well. I was sorry when the series ended--or has it really!
Each book in the series just got bettter. I've kept them because in about a year I'll read them again.

A stunning sequel
This is a very different story from the one found in Poison Study. Poison Study is coming of age story in many ways. It follows a battered (but by no means broken) girl on her path to herself and her freedom. The second book Magic Study finds her on her own again, this time so she can learn how to wield the power she has found within herself to help others. It is the perfect set up in the sense that the amazing repertoire between Valek and Yelena (our girl) may be lost for most of the story but we see Yelena truly find her own (something that would have been hard to do with her highly protective, nearly invincible lover cracking his knuckles over her shoulder...not that Valek would ever be so overt). I have high hopes that the soon-to-be-released Fire Study will reach the bar set by its predecessors.

Yelena's ready to find her family, learn how to control her magic and start a new life. But her brother seems to hate her and they're a serial killer on the lose. And Yelena can't help but get involved....
This book is filled with fast-paced excitement. Readers will want to get their hands on Fire Study as soon as possible (in March)!

Magic Study pure Magic
Magic Study is a great follow up to Maria V. Snyder's Poison Study. Yelena is back. With the help of Irys, the fourth magician of Sitia she is reunited with her family after fourteen long years. But with mixed feelings. Some love her and are happy to see her returned, while others including her own brother think she is a Ixia spy. It doesn't help that she prefers to dress like a Ixian. As her magic develops, rare talents soon show that she might be a soul-finder, which doesn't help to levitate any of the unease. Throw in a diplomatic mission from Ixia and life is complete. Valek in disguise just what she needed, as she was sure missing her life in Ixia, or at least the love of her life Valek. Sitia just as it was in Ixia shows to be hard life. With a few snatched moments with Valek she is a bit happier than before. With a rouge magician as a serial killer she is forced to try to stop him with the help of Valek and her other friends. But to what end. Would helping out his lover get him caught and sentenced to death. In the end Yelena is forced to once again stay behin in Sitia. While Valek is forced to return to Ixia. But at least they still are both alive. Their love survived the separation once before. But will it again. Check out Fire Study March 2008 to find out. I know I will.
