I expected this to be an exciting in depth look at Poe but all it was was a chronological and factual accounting of his life without any inspiration.

"The Invention of Murder" is an interesting subtitle for this book. I read all I could get of Edgar Poe (he did not like to be known as Edgar Allan) in my early teens, fascinated by his use of language and the rhythm and images of his poetry. He of course is world reknowned, but the contrasting subject of this book, Mary Rogers, had her 15 minutes and would have been lost to fame, had she not been murdered, and had Edgar Poe not needed a subject for his versatile pen. It's a masterly work. You need never read another biography of Poe or a study of the origins of the mystery as a genre. At the same time you are put into New York when it still had a townish feel, enough so everyone could know who served at Anderson's cigar store, and went to escape the summer heat with a cooling stroll on the Jersey side of the Hudson - perhaps to find in the river a body you knew. Who killed the poor girl? How did she die? It's a true story and as even Poe would admit, truth is stranger than any fiction.
