After growing up on Manhattan's Upper East Side, Cooper felt a magnetic pull toward the unknown. If he could keep moving, and keep exploring, he felt he could stay one step ahead of his past, including the fame surrounding his mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, and the deaths of his father and older brother. As a reporter, the frenetic pace of filing dispatches from war-torn countries, and the danger that came with it, helped him avoid having to look too closely at the pain and loss that was right in front of him. But recently, during the course of one extraordinary, tumultuous year, it became impossible for him to continue to separate his work from his life. Writing with vivid memories of his childhood and early career as a roving correspondent, Cooper reveals how deeply affected he has been by the wars, disasters, and tragedies he has witnessed, and why he continues to be drawn to some of the most perilous places on earth.Read Less

4.25 stars! First, I should disclose I'm a big fan of Anderson Cooper so this may not be a totally unbiased review. I didn't quite know what to expect from this memoir. Well, maybe I expected to get more of a "clinically journalistic" view of his correspondant experiences and perhaps some ego. I did not get either. And what I did not expect, however was for Anderson to be so open and raw with his emotions. We still get the correspondant's experiences but Cooper uses the emotional fingers of his past tragedies to touch touch the hands and heart of current events. Kudos Mr. Cooper, on showing us your vulnerability

This book is written on such a personal level that one starts to feel they know the 'real' Anderson Cooper. I cried when I finished the book and spent the entire day missing having it to read. Absolutely beautiful in its portrayals of everyday people living in crisis, it encourages the reader to do soul-searching of their own. Read it, share it and read it again.

Great Insight Into Cooper's Mind
Half autobiography, half history book, Cooper's story is the story of his journey as a reporter and his memories of the wars/disasters he covered. Written in his voice and filled with his thoughts as a reporter and, more importantly, his thoughts as a man in the modern world. A fast read and very engrossing.

A fascinating look at the "real" world
Anderson Cooper certainly portrays the world in a raw and yet sensitive way. He has seen the worst and yet has a need to keep reporting (without clouding), the story. I had a difficult time putting the book down - my heart was touched by his candid views. It made me realize that being a person of "priviledge" does not guarantee you an easy time.
