Each Marilyn Nelson book one reads is simply another literary masterpiece for children. She gives a stunning portrayal of Dr. George Washington Carver in her book and captures his dignity, humility, and intelligence. I learned so much about a man who most people only associate with sweet potatoes, peanuts, and plants. She introduces to us an artist, writer, friend, God-centered man with other beautiful character traits. After finishing this book, you will never view Carver in the same way. You cannot have a collection of children's books without adding Marilyn Nelson on the shelf. That would be a tragedy for literature.
