Written with buoyant humor and a sharp sense of human desire, this is the story of love pursued at any cost, of how friendship and history unite people for better or worse, and of the hope for that redemptive kiss capable of reconciling estranged lovers and countries.Written with buoyant humor and a sharp sense of human desire, this is the story of love pursued at any cost, of how friendship and history unite people for better or worse, and of the hope for that redemptive kiss capable of reconciling estranged lovers and countries.Read Less

I recommended this book to my monthly reading group, The Bookaholics, after checking it out from the public library. I was so impressed with Eduardo Santiago?s first novel, ?Tomorrow They Will Kiss,? that I was sure the rest of the group would be as well. As usual, the books that make for the best discussion are those on which not all members agree. This story revolves around the lives of three Cuban women who have immigrated to Union City, New Jersey, in the 1960?s, and how they deal with the challenges they face. Their stories mirror the plots of the telenovelas they enjoy, and allow the reader to glimpse small town life in Cuba during the revolution. Most members found the book highly entertaining. Several members were impressed by how the author gave each of the three main characters very unique and distinct personalities. Some characters seemed to assimilate into American culture and to grow, while others were mired in the social standards and values they left behind in Cuba, hoping to return to that life soon. Overall, the Bookaholics gave the book a 4 out of 5 rating.
