Short, simply written chapters, packed with living characters and thrilling action - and illustrated with vivid colour pictures - illuminate all the main events from Britain's earliest days to the end of Victoria's reign. And its glorious fusion of myth and legend with sober fact - Canute and King Arthur with Cromwell and the Indian Mutiny - is as seductive now as it ever was. 'I was given H.E. Marshall's Our Island Story at Christmas 1936 and I've still got that copy. It was a direct inspiration for me in my career as a historian.' ANTONIA FRASER, DAILY TELEGRAPH 'It is written in a way that really captured my imagination and which nurtured my interest in the history of our great nation.' DAVID CAMERONHide synopsis

This book gives a nice beginners history of Britian. It is written in prose form; a series of short stories, which makes it interesting and readable. It is written to children, but is an enjoyable read for an adult, too.
This is an excellent children's book on the history of England. It begins with the legend of Albion and ends with the reign of Queen Victoria. The author freely mixes facts and legends. She says that even though learned historians will say they are only myths the stories are there and should be told. Some such stories are the story of Albion, the story of Brutus, how the Giant's Dance came to England, and many others. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
